Spring Break Planning

HAPPY SPRING BREAK!!

I am so happy for this vacation to relax. Prior to us getting out of school, we had been testing our Kinders for two weeks. Add that to the report card assessments, unit tests, and chapter tests. Needless to say. I was all tested out, not to mention how our Kinders felt.

Despite all of this, we made it through! We completed testing and enter our spring vacation with nothing on our mind but vacation...right?! Of course not! I am sure, like others who are on spring break, we are working on our next projects and lessons.

I started with my spring themed Clip 'N Learn Alphabet activities. You can find these in my TPT store (TPT store icon located in sidebar). The mega pack includes 4 products in 1. The ABC matching cards are easy to use. I use clothes pins for the cards. It is a way for me to get more fine motor skills incorporated into activities for students who still need the practice. I make booklets with the letter identification printables. Students work at their own pace identifying and "highlighting" the focus letters of each page. I also include concentration cards. My students love seeing who can find the most matches. When they finish, they practice saying the letter names. I check their result page based on the amount of letters they can name correctly.

I plan to include these in my Daily 5/Literacy Stations. My students get excited when they have new stations. I try to make sure that the are easy to use and that it promotes independence. But I don't use these as my exclusive stations.

Caitlin Clabby of Kindergarten Smiles is one of my favorite TPT sellers. She creates Word Work activities for Kinders. I like the product because she not only creates I CAN posters so the students have a visual cue of expectations while working with the stations; she include response pages so that students can show what they know/learned. They are responsible for their learning while working on each station. My students have been working with her Word Work stations since November. They have really become very independent each month that they use them. I highly recommend this product if you are looking for an easy to manage station for your students. Thanks to Caitlin for such a great product!!

April Word Work

Another shout out goes to Annie Moffatt of The Moffatt Girls. She is another one of my favorite TPT sellers. She creates NO PREP activities. They are a life saver. I use them for many different things: Sub Tubs, morning work, concept review, assessments, etc. They are very user friendly and include lots of fine motor skill activities. Her latest one is the Spring Math and Literacy Packet. I will be using this packet for both April and May.

Danielle Kroger of Kroger's Kindergaten is another great TPT seller. She creates homework and morning work packet for Kinders. The skills used in her packets cover skills that are taught in my lessons for both reading and math. I have been using them for two years now. I feel that if we were ever in a time crunch for anything, if we did morning work,  my students were okay until we had a full day in class without major interruptions. She also creates emergent readers to go with her morning work, too. I use these for my read to self Daily 5 stations.

Groundhog's Day in Room 117

It's Groundhog's Day in My room today. My students were excited to see Phil in the Youtube video I showed them this morning. According to Phil, we will have 6 more weeks of winter.

I developed an activity pack for Groundhog's Day. It is a supplement pack to accompany the things you may already have or to add to your collection. Just search the Teachers Pay Teachers store button located to the right of this page. It will take you directly to my TPT store for this resource.

Winter Madness

I am seriously mentally exhausted today. We have had a whirlwind week due to weather, school delays, and schedule modifications. My students are preparing for a test on subtraction and reading. I am making an "executive decision" and postponing them.

So what's next?

GROUNDHOG'S DAY... that's right! The long awaited day where we get to see if there is going to be more winter or spring filled days. I can't wait to do the surveys and graphs with my students. It will be a great and fun filled end to a week of winter madness.

Staying on Track

It has been 4 1/2 weeks of school and I am already feeling stress of the new year. Between Wonders training, TS Gold training, PST, Open house, PTA, Parent-Teacher Conferences, Go Math, and teaching; I have barely enough time to breathe. (Taking a deep breath right now.) This is why I am more sure than ever that being a teacher is a calling. It is not for the faint of heart. It is designed for those people who look at pressure, stress, anxiety, and high expectations as an avenue to teach children how to cope with their feelings and press on to a better YOU. If you are feeling overwhelmed, know that you are not alone. There is a network of teachers out there that can relate to you and help you get through it. If you have seen a person reaching a state of despair, reach out to them so that they can stay on track. We may not get the credit; but, we INSPIRE children to be AWESOME!

There Really Can Be...

Hello Everyone,

If you were like me, things began to escalate in speed once May came: paper work, cum folders, end of the year assessments, field trips, special programs, awards day report cards, packing up class resources, etc. The list just kept getting more and more massive. I finally just took a breath and said to myself: "I am only human!" It's funny how we take on this super human persona only to have real human emotion of being overwhelmed and pressed for time. I knew at that moment that it was time to take some ME TIME.  I wanted to take a break from things for a while. This will be the first year that I am not teaching a summer school program. I almost don't know what to do with myself.

I reached 1,000+ followers on Pinterest this weekend. I was so excited. Most people follow my 7 Habits board and Class Is In Session boards. If you haven't visited or joined Pinterest, you should. It is a great way to get great ideas from other educators. At the bottom of my blog there is a preview of pins that I have posted. Feel free to look around and pin whatever you like.

Now I want to give a shout-out to Monaco Pictures. I am not endorsing and have no financial interest in Monaco Pictures. I just thought that a program that they provide to children was a great service. Monaco Pictures is sponsoring a Children's (Kid's) Theater during the summer. They will playing movies such as Rio, Lorax, Kung Fu Panda 2, and more for FREE. That's right, FREE!! Today, I took my son to see Madagascar 3 and he loved sitting there watching the movie and eating popcorn. As he told his dad after, "IT WAS AWESOME!" It was his first trip to the movie theater and he did a great job. We are definitely going back! Check with you local movie theater and ask them about any special theater programs for children and you may be surprised with what you find.

All About Sight Words

I have been looking for different activities to increase the level of sight word retention among my students. I will say this before I get started, I am not endorsing these websites. I am only listing them as resources. This may be what my students need to practice at school and at home.

The first website that I came across is STARFALL. We use STARFALL as part of our small group instruction. It is a pre-requisite to the FOCUS program. I didn't realize there was a game for sight words until now. It will definitely be part of my small group rotation.

Next up: DOLCHWORD. This website has various games. I found this one to be more interesting because you not only have to recognize the word by sight, you have to listen for the correct word as well. It matches verbal and visual clues.

Finally, we have COOKIE.com. This website also has a database of various games. This is also a matching game. What I like about this game is that after the student has found the matches, it automatically goes to the next level. This allows for students to work continuously without stopping to ask for assistance.

I am sure there are many more online games out there. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to comment bellow.
